The first step to finding a home is often to look in the local papers and notice boards in newsagents windows and supermarkets where accommodation to let may be advertised. You may find the Surrey Advertiser newspaper website useful for searching for properties. Click Surrey Advertiser to search for available properties. There are also many lettings agents who let accommodation in the local area, although some are unwilling to accept people who receive Housing Benefit to help pay the rent. Details of lettings agents can be found in the Yellow Pages and Thompson Local Directory or from the Housing Advice Centre.
If you are currently living in unsuitable accommodation or you are unable to afford a deposit to secure private rented accommodation you may be eligible for assistance under the council’s Homes 4U scheme. Click Private Renting for more information.
There are a number of hostels in and around Guildford that offer advice, accommodation and support. The majority of the hostels are long stay where you can live for several months or years. Access to most of these hostels is by Council referral. It may take a few weeks to get into a hostel after a referral, as demand is often high.
